Cold Room Insulation Panels

From a small chiller room to a multi-chamber blast freeze facility, cold storage insulation is not a place to compromise. The wrong panel thickness means energy bills that climb every month, condensation problems that damage the structure, and a cold chain that fails exactly when your product depends on it. ACE has built cold storage insulation across walk-in rooms to large-scale cold chain complexes nationwide.

The Practical Guide

Matching Panel to Temperature Zone

Cold storage is not one specification. A chiller room holding vegetables at 4°C has completely different panel requirements than a blast freeze chamber at minus 35°C. Get the temperature zone wrong in your specification and you either overspend on unnecessary thickness or underspend and watch your energy costs and condensation problems climb.

01

Chiller (0°C to +5°C)

The lightest cold storage requirement. 60mm PUF panels handle this comfortably for most facility sizes.

02

Cold Room (-18°C to 0°C)

Standard cold storage. 80 to 100mm PUF or PIR depending on facility size and energy cost priorities.

03

Deep Freeze (-25°C to -18°C)

Requires 100 to 120mm. We recommend PIR at this range for better thermal stability under sustained low temperature.

04

Blast Freeze (below -25°C)

The most demanding cold storage application. 120 to 150mm PIR panels with cam-lock airtight joints are the professional specification.

Where It Applies

Common Use Cases

Walk-In Cold Rooms

Small to medium cold storage for restaurants, retail, and light commercial use.

Cold Chain Warehouses

Large-scale distribution centres for FMCG, dairy, and perishable goods logistics.

Blast Freeze Facilities

Rapid freezing chambers for food processing and seafood export operations.

Pharma Cold Storage

Temperature-controlled storage for vaccines and temperature-sensitive medicines.

Questions

About Cold Room

The questions cold storage contractors and facility owners ask most often.

For a standard chiller room at 0°C to 5°C, 60mm PUF panels are typical. For a cold room at -18°C, plan for 80 to 100mm. The exact thickness also depends on room size, door frequency, and ambient temperature outside the cold room. Send us your specifications and we calculate the exact U-value requirement.

For standard cold rooms above minus 20°C, PUF is cost-effective and performs well. For deep freeze and blast freeze below minus 20°C, we recommend PIR because of its superior dimensional stability and thermal performance at extreme low temperatures. The panel does not shift or degrade as readily through repeated freeze-thaw cycling.

Correct panel thickness for your temperature zone is the first defence. Beyond that, proper vapour barrier detailing at all joints, cam-lock or tongue and groove sealing, and correctly designed door and dock seals prevent warm humid air from reaching cold surfaces where condensation forms.

Yes. ACE designs and builds the complete cold storage shell including the structural steel frame, panel envelope, doors, and where required the refrigeration coordination. Everything from a single supplier, built at our Derabassi facility.
