Sound Insulation Panels

Noise control in industrial buildings is usually an afterthought, addressed only after complaints arrive from neighbours or a generator room becomes unbearable to walk past. It does not need to be reactive. Rockwool core panels with perforated interior facings provide genuine acoustic absorption alongside thermal insulation, in the same panel system you are already specifying for other reasons.

Choosing the Right Panel for Sound Insulation

Best Acoustic Performance

The clear choice for genuine sound absorption. Fibrous mineral structure outperforms any foam core at the same thickness.

Basic Acoustic Benefit

Provides some noise reduction from panel mass but does not match Rockwool for genuine acoustic absorption performance.

The Practical Guide

Why Mineral Wool Outperforms Foam for Sound

Foam-core panels are engineered for thermal performance, and sound absorption is incidental at best. Mineral wool is fundamentally a fibrous, porous material that dissipates sound energy through friction as it passes through the fibre matrix. That physical property, not a special coating or treatment, is why Rockwool consistently outperforms PIR or PUF for acoustic applications.

01

Perforated Interior Facing

A perforated steel skin allows sound waves to reach the absorptive mineral wool core rather than reflecting off a solid surface.

02

Rain Noise on Roofing

One of the most requested but rarely discussed benefits. Rockwool roofing is noticeably quieter during heavy monsoon rain.

03

Generator & Machine Rooms

Combines fire safety (often a code requirement for generator rooms) with genuine noise reduction in one panel.

04

Not a PIR or PUF Strength

Foam-core panels can be specified for acoustic applications but will not match Rockwool performance at the same thickness.

Where It Applies

Common Use Cases

Generator Enclosures

DG set rooms requiring both fire safety and noise containment for surrounding areas.

Manufacturing Halls

Reducing reverberation and machinery noise in large-span industrial production spaces.

Data Centre Roofing

Quieter server environments with reduced rain impact noise during monsoon season.

Testing Facilities

Acoustic separation for quality control labs and equipment testing environments.

Questions

About Sound Insulation

What facility managers and acoustic consultants ask about panel-based sound insulation.

Actual noise reduction depends on panel thickness, perforation pattern, frequency of the noise source, and room geometry. Rockwool consistently outperforms PIR or PUF at the same thickness due to its fibrous structure. For a specific noise reduction target, share your source noise levels and our team can advise on the appropriate specification.

A solid facing still provides some acoustic benefit from the mass and core material compared to a single steel sheet, but the perforated facing is what allows sound to actually reach and be absorbed by the mineral wool core. For genuine acoustic performance, perforated facing is recommended.

Yes. Rockwool acoustic panels provide the same non-combustible fire performance and reasonable thermal insulation as standard Rockwool panels. You are not sacrificing thermal or fire performance to gain acoustic benefit, all three come in the same panel.

Yes, and this is one of the most appreciated but least marketed benefits. Building occupants under Rockwool roofing consistently report significantly reduced rain impact noise compared to foam-core roofing during heavy monsoon downpours.
