PUF built the insulated panel industry and it is still an excellent core. But when a room has to hold deep freeze, when fire behaviour matters, or when every millimetre of wall counts, a different chemistry earns its place. This is the case for PIR, made plainly, with the honest part included.
The Short Version
PIR Is Not
Better PUF.
It Is Different Chemistry.
Polyurethane and polyisocyanurate come off the same family tree, which is why people treat them as the same panel at two different prices. They are not. PIR is cured with a different chemistry that leaves it more thermally efficient, more stable across temperature, and far better behaved in a fire. On an ordinary day you would never notice. On the day a compressor fails or a fire starts, you notice everything.
None of this makes PUF a poor choice. For a great many projects PUF is exactly right, and we will tell you so. The point of this page is to show you, honestly, where PIR earns the premium you pay for it, so you specify the right core the first time instead of discovering the difference later.
PIR and PUF, Side by Side
Why It Wins
Three Reasons
PIR Earns Its Place
Thinner Wall, Same Performance
With a thermal conductivity of 0.022 W/mK, PIR reaches the same insulation value as PUF in a slimmer panel. In a large cold store that reclaims real floor area and cuts the steel and cladding you pay for. The colder the room, the wider the gap grows.
It Chars, It Does Not Drip
Put a flame to standard foam and it can soften, drip, and feed the fire while filling the space with smoke. PIR forms a protective char layer instead, holds its shape longer, and gives off markedly less smoke. Our PIR is Eurofins certified with lower smoke toxicity than any standard PUF panel on the market. In an occupied building that is measured in lives, not ratings.
Stable When It Matters Most
PIR holds its performance from deep freeze at minus 40°C up to plus 120°C, a far wider band than PUF manages. For blast freezing and deep freeze storage that stability is the difference between a room that holds its setpoint and one that quietly fights its own insulation.
When PUF Is
the Right Call
We make and sell both, so we have no reason to oversell PIR. For cold rooms and chillers holding above minus twenty degrees, for insulated walls and roofs on general industrial buildings, and for projects where fire is not the governing concern, PUF gives you excellent performance at a lower price, and it is what we will recommend. Choose PIR when the room goes deep freeze, when the building holds people and fire matters, when wall space is tight, or when you want the lowest energy bill over the next twenty years. The right answer is the one that fits the room, not the one with the bigger margin.

Cheaper on Day One
Is Not Cheaper.
A panel is bought once and paid for every month it stays in service, through the energy it saves or wastes. PIR costs a little more at purchase and gives it back across the life of the building, in a lower cooling load, reclaimed floor space, and a fire risk you have properly managed. On a cold store running twenty years, the premium is a rounding error against the energy bill. The cheapest panel on the quotation is rarely the cheapest panel to own.
